Comments:
I was assigned to the 130th Medical Detachment for approx 1 year beginning in November 63 and flew as a
medic on Medevac missions for a good part of that time. Dr Frank Pena MD was the flight surgeon and unit
commander during that period and Sgts Marsh and McWhorter, I believe, were the sequential NCOICs of the
detachment. Other enlisted I recall from this time were Robert Pardue, George Wendt and Angel Castro-Rios
but 50 years of cobwebs prevent me from recalling the names of the several others from that
time. I have been asked to speak to a class of senior citizens in our area regarding my experience flying
Medevac in the early days of the Vietnam conflict.
In preparing for this presentation I ran across this website as well as one dedicated to DUST OFF alone;
resources which I had no idea were available (and a real blast from the past).
Not having thought about this a lot in the ensuing 50 years I was trying to wrap my
own head around where my associates at the 130th and I fit in the historical time line relative to the
development of the combat Medevac concept before trying to present this to others.
I would like to get comments and photos of other ‘DUST OFFers from that era or later.
Several years ago I had an opportunity to reconnect with Dr. Frank Pena, a leader and mentor to which
I will always carry a special debt of gratitude for
his influence during my formative ‘knucklehead’ years. We had lost contact and in the ensuing decades he
had added a law degree to his medical credentials and had opened a Law practice!
One of my abiding memories was Frank’s Purple Heart award for an arrow wound from a Montagnard crossbow;
if I recall correctly, the first such award since the Indian Wars!
For my own part, after Vietnam I re-enlisted for Special Forces training
and spent my last 2 years as an A Team medic with the 8th Special Forces in Panama.

Hello Al, can you post the following on your Guest Book, thanks.
As always it was good to see you again, the 117th really came through big time in helping me with the book.
Hand salute. John Brennan

"To all the gentlemen of the 117th who attended the St. Louis VHCMA gathering and
spent time sharing their stories, photos and thoughts with me at my author's table.....
THANK YOU, you guys are the best.

Just a reminder, this is a two book series, this first one lists all of the named Army helos in Nam.
The next one will feature beautiful nose art mostly, and several dozen anecdotes.
They are a tandem set that go hand-in-hand and compliment each other. "

Do any of you guys remember coming in one after noon and seeing that LOCH up on sand bags?
They had taken it for a test flight and forgot to bolt on the skids?? Any one got a picture of it?
I was in the VA the other day to have my shoulder looked at,
when it was over a very young good looking nurse
came in to give me a very stern lecture, while her young supervisor looked on.
These two kids were very serious about me seeing a doctor more often,
here I was grinning from ear to ear.
But when I got up to leave she thanked me for my service!
Stopped me dead in my tracks, first time that happened.
Times are changing.

Have a good one guys, from here on out every day is a gift.

Does anyone remember or have any information about Cpt. Tim Fry? He was a pilot. I recall he was from Carmel, CA, and have often wondered what he did after Vietnam. After my tour in Vietnam, I finished my service at Ft. Eustis in Newport News, VA, in 1971. After the army, I stayed in Newport News for 30 years and returned to my home in Pennsylvania after I retired.

Comments: I joined up with the 140Th CHFM at Ft. Bragg, NC in March 1961. We were attached to the 8th Cargo Helicopter Unit for maintenance/repairs. The 8th/140th were strike units at that time and were put on alert the first part of Nov. 1961 and shipped out to Oakland Army Depot, CA about a week later. The copter's few to Calif. and prepared for overseas shipment. Several were shipped by commercial ships and the rest loaded with all other equipment about the USNS Core at the Oakland Navy yard. I do not recall the exact date we shipped out, but arrived 21 days later in Saigon on Dec. 11, 1961 along with the 52nd H-21 unit from Fort Lewis. WA. We were the first complete Helicopter units to arrive in Vietnam. We were shipped out on 6 months TDY orders. That lasted about 4 to 5 months then changed to a PCS for a 12 month tour. The 8th/140th were transferred to Qui Nhon in Jan. 1962. It was 13 months before several of us in the 140th got sent sent back to the States due to difficulty in finding H-21 qualified maintenance personal as replacements.
I WOULD TO LIKE TO HEAR FROM ANYONE WHO WAS WITH THE 8TH/140TH DURING THIS TIME TO SHARE MEMORIES AND COME UP TO DATE ON WHAT WE HAVE DONE WITH OUR LIVES SINCE THEN. I WILL GLADLY ANSWER ANY E-MAILS SENT. Blessings to All

This is John Brennan, active member of the VHCMA and the 114th Avn Co Assn.
I'm collecting "names" (e.g. FLYING COFFIN, IRON BUTTERFLY) that in-country Army copter crews painted on their aircraft during their Vietnam tours, 1961-73.
Future book by aviation publisher is in the making.
Have cataloged 2,719 names to date. I expect that number to exceed 3,000 when complete. Would very much like to include as many PERSONALIZED copter names as possible. Photos of "names" are fine but not necessary to be included in the database section of the book. "Names" alone will do.
The second part of this book project is the photo collection of helicopter "nose art" that includes "names", artwork, graffiti, everything & anything that was painted officially and unofficially on in-country Army copters, 1961-73.
Send "name" info and/or scanned "nose art" pics to johnmailman@yahoo.com Regards, John Brennan, former SP5, Flight Operations Coordinator, 114 AHC, Vinh Long AAF, Mekong Delta, 1970-71
PS: In-Country YEARBOOKS are often a great source for copter "names". Take a peek and give me a shout if something interesting is found.

I started out in the 52nd Air Lift Platoon in Pleiku and was sent TDY to Quang Ngai. While there, our whole crew as well as the Huey were transferred to the 117th out of Qui Nhon. We remained there TDY until June of 1964 at which time I was transferred back to Qui Nhon to await my deros date. I served as the crew chief on 62-01911. Later on I went to Flt School and retired as a CW-4 Black Hawk/UH-1/OH-58 Test Pilot and MTFE.
I would be interested in communicating with anyone who participated in the DO-XA Operation on April 29, 1964. Our aircraft took a few rounds and it had to be sling loaded out that day.

I did many jobs from Company Handyman, Water truck Driver, Maintenance Crew Leader and many more.
The way I finally found the your web site. I was watching the military channel on TV and there was a series about helicopters and their roles in Vietnam. At the end of the show they had internet information to get further information and here I'm.
After I left the Army I went to work for the Telephone Company in Santa Cruz California. We lived there for 30 years then I retired and moved to Southern California to be close to my sons and my Wife's Family.
I read on the site that there is a reunion in June of 2009 in Reno. Most of my family lives in the Reno/Sparks area. I'm going to try to make it to the reunion. I have some health issues due to Agent Orange and I'm trying to heal from additional surgery that I had to have last year.
I'm glad I found the web site and I hope I'll be able to meet up with some old friends and make a lot of new ones.

I served with the 117th (Pink Panthers) after the 229th AHC stood down (1st Cav helicopter company imbedded in the 1st Aviation Brigade at Bearcat). I have located a lot of 117th personnel to include Sidewinders. I am trying to make contact with Oscar Spurlock, Mitchell and a third person that I cannot remember by name (the three of them shared a hooch room with a bar in it across from the em club by the bunker). If anyone can help with the third name please contact me.
Thanks

1st Request from Joe

Subject: Need help with information
Date: Tue, 2 Dec 2008 03:00:47 -0500
From: baskin50@aol.com

I would like to contact members of my crew but don't know where to start. I'm specifically looking for the crew that was involved in a mission where some were eventually awarded Silver stars and Distinguished Flying Crosses. I know my gunner was Jones but I can't recall his first name. The officers that day I have no idea. I would like to know or hear from them or anyone that knows there names. I think my tail number was either 16208 or 16800.
What I recall about the mission that day in 68 I think. We were supplying a infantry company when they encountered a much larger force. We were unable to use our guns due to the proximity of the two opposing forces and continued to hover and lower and drop supply's to them. As we hovered we were taking automatic weapons fire with several hits to the cabin area and unknown to us at the time a hit to one of the rotor drag braces. The brace was almost cut in half. The ship was out of service for several days for repairs. I left country in September I think. I received my award while I was in a holding company State side. you can reach me by E-mail at baskin50@aol.com

2nd Request:

Baskin50@aol.com Sent: Wed 12/03/08 5:56 PM

To: namvet42@hotmail.com

The information that I have found is my first ship was #66-00800 that had to be destroyed after landing on stumps in a LZ Mr McGovern was the pilot. I just happened to be on R&R the day this occurred. I have a photo of Mr Reese using a grenade launcher on it.

The ship in question was tail # 67-17208 and the action took place on April 18,1968 the operation was north east of Saigon. while supporting two rifle company's that came into contact with an estimated enemy battalion. I believe the author may have been a LTC Donald E. Mulligan. Major Kinsely may have been the 117th CO at that time?

67-17208 was a bran new ship that I got after the Con-Tho incident that I'm sure everyone recalls if they were there! I was suppose to be the lead ship that day but due to a leaking main rotor servo I red Xd the ship. I quickly signed off on it once the S hit the fan and went in on the second wave. Maybe some of these stories will jog some old memories? You can post this if you wish and anyone can contact me directly if needed. Thanks Joe Parent

We were the very best of  buds from kindergarten through high school. I was in the middle of my tour in VN when I got word of his death. I last saw him just before I shipped out. I didn't recognize it at the time, but he had the 1000 yard stare. I'd love to hear from any of his comrades.

Comments:     With 52 members of my graduating class (WORWAC 66-17) arrived in the 10th CAB (Dong Ba Thin) in DEC 66.   Assigned to the 117th AHC (stationed in KONTUM) commanded by James E. Rogers (who would be my boss when we both worked for BEECHCRAFT - 1976 through 1989).  Assigned to 1st Platoon (Lift) commanded by CPT Jerry "SHORT SHAFT" Adcock assisted by Brett Knox (and there are a LOT of stories here)!  Flew as pilit for MAJ AULT (OPS) in assaults in Dak To area and the AO in the area of KONTUM.  MAJ ROGERS replaced by MAJ KETZLER, and we continued to follow the 1st BDE 101st ABN - the only part of the "pukin' chickens" (and I wish I had the sew-on patches from then) in country.  In FEB 1967 we wandered down to Tay Ninh and got involved in "JUNCTION CITY" - where I was shot to pieces in LZ PANTHER with LT WOLFE.  My Crew Chief was named DAVENPORT and the Gunner was GALLARDO (I think that is the correct spelling).  WE were the evil people who had LITTLE ANNE FANNY painted on the avionics covers on our aircraft - if the one you flew had blue/gray eyes, that was my old ride!  I stayed with the unit until JUNE 1967 and was DEROS Shuffled to the 176th AHC (new in country) whose motto by that time had become - "Give us a minute and we'll fuck something up!"

In the 117th you drank "Flaming Mimis" for initiations.  You were fed by Viet Namese cooks (I had dysentery twice) and you lived in tents - the GP LARGE I was in at the beginning was referred to as the "Nursery."

 Hello,

I am writing you on behalf of my father who was with the 140th trans CHFM in 1957,

He injured his back while at Ft. Bragg and was hospitalized. He is now trying to receive benefits, but his files were destroyed in St. Louis MO. at the medical records building July 12, 1973 by a catastrophic fire.
The V.A. keeps denying his claim due to lack of records. They recommended tracking down any service member who may have visited him, or can confirm his hospitalization.
He is especially looking for John "Jessie" James from California, Bob McDonald Baltimore Maryland,
and Willie Shaw Chicago Illinois.
My Dad would appreciate your help very much. Steve Bevilacqua stevieheat@comcast.net
His name is Charles Bevilacqua Boston MA
He was with the 140th Trans Det CHFM Ft Bragg NC, then to the 777th in Nevada

Comments:

The 176th AHC has a link to aircraft data base. I've often wondered about the helicopter that became the center of my attention during a very impressionable time of my young life. It actually ended up with a Guard unit in Illinois in later years.

When the 176th AHC was de-activated in late 1971 most the men and aircraft were relocated in country.  Mike Model 66-00618, that I crewed, was reported to have gone to the 117th.  Here is my question?  Does anyone remember this A/C.  Did it still have an obscene message painted on is belly?  Was it still called the 1%? And most curious, did it still have a set of chrome plated mini-guns?

Give me a shout.  I always feared the VC ended up with a set of guns with chrome housings and barrel holders.

Just found the Roster site. My dad is listed within this site. His name is Ronnie W. Melton. He passed away on Dec. 17, 1990 due to a traffic accident. Anyway, I am just now starting to look for information and put together his company he was with. He was a door gunner. I am limited to the information as well and have only pictures and newspaper cut-outs that tell me certain things. I would like to add my email address to his name and maybe someone could contact me. It is mmosley1@tds.net. Also, if you have any other information I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Comments added 11-26-07: Currently starting a search for anything to do with my dad Ronnie W. Melton. I am limited on the information but I do know he joined the ARMY in 1963. He was a door gunner and his gunship was named "Spirit". His pilot was James L. Mimbs. To date that is all i have. Any help or information would be great and well appreciated.

Dear Sir,

My father served in Vietnam from 1964-1965. He was a helicopter pilot. I was able to find a picture of him by his helicopter and I noticed the 117th patch he was wearing (117th AML). I would like a White polo shirt x-large with stated patch on it. I would also like (2) of the 117th (AML) patches (Assault hel. Co.). My father died on 02/19/1973 in a helicopter crash after leaving Vietnam and flying for (PHI inc.). His bell jet ranger went down off the coast of Morgan city in the Gulf of Mexico, killing all on board (4-passengers and pilot- Stan R. Bozek). I have recently made contact with several of his friend?s from Vietnam.  Please e-mail me back at bozek@bellsouth.net with a total cost for my order. I have been looking for a 117th patch for years, as I?m putting a shadow box together. I have recently gotten his DD 214 and other military paper work along with his medals. If you should know anyone who served with him please pass along or post so as I may get in touch with them. I?m my father?s youngest son (39) and he passed away when I was six years old. I have very few pictures and only found memories. My father ?s information is listed below. I?m also trying to find a class photo of his flight class, any help would be appreciated.

First, let me compliment you on your website.  It's great!

I am seeking details on an event that took place at Bao Loc on or about 15 Sep 1967.  My brother-in-law, who was at the time an F-100 jock at Bien Hoa was making his way back to Bien Hoa from R&R through Tan Son Nhut.  He was in his AF blue uniform and caught a hop on a C-130 with one or more en route stops.  After landing at Bao Loc on 15 Sep, my brother-in law and others from the C-130, and possibly some of those assigned to Bao Loc saw some VC approaching from the far end of the runway.  A brief firefight ensued and all the VC (5 to 10 or so) were killed.  All the good guys survived and my brother-in-law received a superficial flesh wound in the leg.

Would appreciate hearing from anyone from the 117th who was at Bao Loc at the time, who might know more details about this event.

Many Thanks,
Jack Griffin

My brother-in-law purchased a UH-1H tail number 68-16563 last summer and we are in the process of restoring it. Our bird was with the 117th Warlords from71-7 to 72-2. I'm trying to find anyone who may have flown her or been a crew member so we can get her history and possibly some pictures. I appreciate the help!

Sympathy constitutes friendship; but in love there is a sort of antipathy, or opposing passion. Each strives to be the other, and both together make up one whole.

The hardest of all is learning to be a well of affection, and not a fountain; to show them we love them not when we feel like it, but when they do.

Woe to the man whose heart has not learned while young to hope, to love - and to put its trust in life.

I was a MACV adviser working in Pleiku Province and know folks from the 119th, 52nd Avn Bn and Camp Holloway from my tour in 1965-66. I am writing a book about the battle of Plei Me Special Forces Camp, 19-28 OCT 65 and would like to contact those who were involved with the fight. I was appointed a "Class A Agent" to pay half the advisers in II Corps for the September 65 payday and was carried to MACV advisory detachments running from Qui Nhon north up Highway 1 to Bong Song on board an H-34 from HMM-353 and was escorted by two Huey gunships from your outfit. Thanks for your service, and the escort. Sol Binzer .

Updating my E-mail address. Sure would like to hear from my brothers from this era and catch up. I treasure the good memories, especially of the guys who saved my tail so many times and in so many ways. Thank you. Russ Freed, Bob Hastings, Wes Ford, Mike Emerton, Wheeler, Schmidt, Mike Drodz, Larry Macintosh,George Jones, "One Leg"(lost your address). Garcia, Beady, Wallace, Lutz, Thrailkill, 6 Cummins, Mulle . And our crewchief on 183 (from Alabama). You'd hardly know it but I learned how to pray while with y'all and still think of you, and of you guys too, whose faces I remember but cannot recall your names.

I spent most of my time as Crew Chief on Warlord 777. It was the C.O.s ship before being transferred into the 2nd Platoon Pink Panthers but kept the Warlord shield on the avionics door. My call sign was JJ for Jerry Jones. Two of my favorite pilots were Mike Deady and Larry Ennis. My best friend and door gunner was Mike Roth.

My 1971, 117th AHC Co., First In Last Out, Warlords, Plantation, RVN. book still survives with much wear and tear. With careful TLC, I may be able to seperate the pages and scan something if anyone is interested. It has been a very long time. Most of the Sidewinders including myself are not in this "year book", because we were absent with 10-14 hour day missions, followed by three types of guard duty when we returned, remember (perimeter, bunker, interior). Not counting preventive maintenance and repairs of our aircraft, remember? Cleaning the mini-guns and M-60's in PD-680 to boot! What long, long days... If memory serves, we had one hot meal (breakfast) most days and "C" rations the rest of the time.

I am a veteran of both Gulf war 1 and Somalia . My cousin however was in the 117th in 'NAM I believe he was there from '69-71 Donald R. Grider. I think he was a Warlord then Beachbum and maybe ANNIE FANNIE I feel pretty certain that he was two of the three listed. From what I understand the call sign changed when they moved in-country. All of the vet's that where there and served either in-country or not have my utmost respect the ones that did not go because their assignments in the service did not send them (they did not dodge) and those that did go have never received their proper thanks. Like I tell Don all the time I love him and Respect him and thank him for having to do what he had to do. And to all of the 'Nam vets I always say to them Thank-you for your service. I was to young and little to go when it ended in 1975 (I was 4) Thank you all Chuck Cravens

Not that it makes a lot of difference at this date and time, but I notice that in all the writings of the 117th there is no mention of the medical detachment that served this company. The medical detachment was the 130th Medical Detachment and this was attached to the 117th. I was the flight surgeon and CO of the 130th, serving under Major Aiton when I first got there in October 1963 and later under Major McGuire. And the pilot of our Dustoff Helicopter was Capt. Scanlan. I believe I replaced a Captain by the name of McDonald or something like that but I do not know who came after me as the way the flight surgeons were rotated did not leave much time for real formal introduction or quality time together before the replacement took off.

Comments: This is a great website... Just a flood of memories, with many incomplete... I served at Plantation, under Maj. Hernandez, with Bommelyn, Boderford, Mimms, Peoples, a guy named Bob (Robert) Quigley from Montana and lots of others whose names and faces just don't quite seem to match up. A favorite pilot was Warlord 22 (double-Deuce). The ship I had, had no external markings, all green, not even the X on tail boom. Lots of ferrying into Cambodia and along the border by Tay Ninh. What a nice job done on this website.
