I started out in the 52nd Air Lift Platoon in Pleiku and was sent TDY to Quang Ngai. While there, our whole crew as well as the Huey were transferred to the 117th out of Qui Nhon. We remained there TDY until June of 1964 at which time I was transferred back to Qui Nhon to await my deros date. I served as the crew chief on 62-01911. Later on I went to Flt School and retired as a CW-4 Black Hawk/UH-1/OH-58 Test Pilot and MTFE.
I would be interested in communicating with anyone who
participated in the DO-XA Operation on April 29, 1964. Our aircraft took a few rounds and it had to be sling loaded out that day.

>My name is Gordon Swolgaard and I've just located this web site. I have looked over the years for some connection to my old company in Vietnam but never thought to just type in the unit. Anyway I found you now and hopefully I'll eventually meet up with some old friends.
The following is information for the guest book.
As I said my name is Gordon Swolgaard SP5th Class
Todays date is 3-26-09
My e-mail address is chevyfive6@aol.com
I was assigned to the 117th AHC close to Long Bein and Ben Hoa .
I was in country form January 1969 to March 1971 (1 year full tour and 2- 6-month extensions)
I did many jobs from Company Handyman, Water truck Driver, Maintenance Crew Leader and many more.
The way I finally found the your web site. I was watching the military channel on TV and there was a series about helicopters and their roles in Vietnam. At the end of the show they had internet information to get further information and here I'm.
After I left the Army I went to work for the Telephone Company in Santa Cruz California. We lived there for 30 years then I retired and moved to Southern California to be close to my sons and my Wife's Family.
I read on the site that there is a reunion in June of 2009 in Reno. Most of my family lives in the Reno/Sparks area. I'm going to try to make it to the reunion. I have some health issues due to Agent Orange and I'm trying to heal from additional surgery that I had to have last year.
I'm glad I found the web site and I hope I'll be able to meet up with some old friends and make a lot of new ones.

I served with the 117th (Pink Panthers) after the 229th AHC stood down (1st Cav helicopter company imbedded in the 1st Aviation Brigade at Bearcat). I have located a lot of 117th personnel to include Sidewinders. I am trying to make contact with Oscar Spurlock, Mitchell and a third person that I cannot remember by name (the three of them shared a hooch room with a bar in it across from the em club by the bunker). If anyone can help with the third name please contact me.
Thanks

From: baskin50@aol.com
I would like to contact members of my crew but don't know where to start. I'm specifically looking for the crew that was involved in a mission where some were eventually awarded Silver stars and Distinguished Flying Crosses. I know my gunner was Jones but I can't recall his first name. The officers that day I have no idea. I would like to know or hear from them or anyone that knows there names. I think my tail number was either 16208 or 16800.
What I recall about the mission that day in 68 I think. We were supplying a infantry company when they encountered a much larger force. We were unable to use our guns due to the proximity of the two opposing forces and continued to hover and lower and drop supply's to them. As we hovered we were taking automatic weapons fire with several hits to the cabin area and unknown to us at the time a hit to one of the rotor drag braces. The brace was almost cut in half. The ship was out of service for several days for repairs. I left country in September I think. I received my award while I was in a holding company State side. you can reach me by E-mail at baskin50@aol.com

is still flying, My wife told me that when a guy has a mid life crisis that he usually gets a boat or
a motorcycle not go half way around the world to a War Zone. Told her a guy could get hurt on a motorcycle so
I was just being safe.

Comments: I'm looking for someone who remembers Gordon Shirley. He flew gun ships in 67-68 and was killed in an A/C accident at Ft. Stewart in July 68. We were the very best of buds from kindergarten through high school. I was in the middle of my tour in VN when I got word of his death. I last saw him just before I shipped out. I didn't recognize it at the time, but he had the 1000 yard stare. I'd love to hear from any of his comrades.

Comments:
The 176th AHC has a link to aircraft data base. I've often wondered about the helicopter that became the center of my attention during a very impressionable time of my young life. It actually ended up with a Guard unit in Illinois in later years.
When the 176th AHC was de-activated in late 1971 most the men and aircraft were relocated in country. Mike Model 66-00618, that I crewed, was reported to have gone to the 117th. Here is my question? Does anyone remember this A/C. Did it still have an obscene message painted on is belly? Was it still called the 1%? And most curious, did it still have a set of chrome plated mini-guns?
Give me a shout. I always feared the VC ended up with a set of guns with chrome housings and barrel holders.

Just found the Roster site. My dad is listed within this site. His name is Ronnie W. Melton. He passed away on Dec. 17, 1990 due to a traffic accident. Anyway, I am just now starting to look for information and put together his company he was with. He was a door gunner. I am limited to the information as well and have only pictures and newspaper cut-outs that tell me certain things. I would like to add my email address to his name and maybe someone could contact me. It is mmosley1@tds.net. Also, if you have any other information I would appreciate it. Thanks.Comments added 11-26-07: Currently starting a search for anything to do with my dad Ronnie W. Melton. I am limited on the information but I do know he joined the ARMY in 1963. He was a door gunner and his gunship was named "Spirit". His pilot was James L. Mimbs. To date that is all i have. Any help or information would be great and well appreciated.

Dear Sir,
My father served in Vietnam from 1964-1965. He was a helicopter pilot. I was able to find a picture of him by his helicopter and I noticed the 117th patch he was wearing (117th AML). I would like a White polo shirt x-large with stated patch on it. I would also like (2) of the 117th (AML) patches (Assault hel. Co.). My father died on 02/19/1973 in a helicopter crash after leaving Vietnam and flying for (PHI inc.). His bell jet ranger went down off the coast of Morgan city in the Gulf of Mexico, killing all on board (4-passengers and pilot- Stan R. Bozek). I have recently made contact with several of his friend?s from Vietnam. Please e-mail me back at bozek@bellsouth.net with a total cost for my order. I have been looking for a 117th patch for years, as I?m putting a shadow box together. I have recently gotten his DD 214 and other military paper work along with his medals. If you should know anyone who served with him please pass along or post so as I may get in touch with them. I?m my father?s youngest son (39) and he passed away when I was six years old. I have very few pictures and only found memories. My father ?s information is listed below. I?m also trying to find a class photo of his flight class, any help would be appreciated.
Name: Stan R. Bozek

Rank: WO-01 in Vietnam and WO-02 after Vietnam.
Flight class: 63-5w (PH-1 and PH-2)

Sympathy constitutes friendship; but in love there is a sort of antipathy, or opposing passion. Each strives to be the other, and both together make up one whole.
The hardest of all is learning to be a well of affection, and not a fountain; to show them we love them not when we feel like it, but when they do.
Woe to the man whose heart has not learned while young to hope, to love - and to put its trust in life.

I was searching for information on my cousin, Greg Morgan (KIA 3/15/71) and his helicopter crash and came upon your site. It is wonderful and I want to thank each of you for your service and apologize for all the people who gave you a hard time and did not treat you as the heroes you are and were for serving over there. Thanks again!

I was a MACV adviser working in Pleiku Province and know folks from the 119th, 52nd Avn Bn and Camp Holloway from my tour in 1965-66. I am writing a book about the battle of Plei Me Special Forces Camp, 19-28 OCT 65 and would like to contact those who were involved with the fight. I was appointed a "Class A Agent" to pay half the advisers in II Corps for the September 65 payday and was carried to MACV advisory detachments running from Qui Nhon north up Highway 1 to Bong Song on board an H-34 from HMM-353 and was escorted by two Huey gunships from your outfit. Thanks for your service, and the escort. Sol Binzer .

I spent most of my time as Crew Chief on Warlord 777. It was the C.O.s ship before being transferred into the 2nd Platoon Pink Panthers but kept the Warlord shield on the avionics door. My call sign was JJ for Jerry Jones. Two of my favorite pilots were Mike Deady and Larry Ennis. My best friend and door gunner was Mike Roth.

My 1971, 117th AHC Co., First In Last Out, Warlords, Plantation, RVN. book still survives with much wear and tear. With careful TLC, I may be able to seperate the pages and scan something if anyone is interested. It has been a very long time. Most of the Sidewinders including myself are not in this "year book", because we were absent with 10-14 hour day missions, followed by three types of guard duty when we returned, remember (perimeter, bunker, interior). Not counting preventive maintenance and repairs of our aircraft, remember? Cleaning the mini-guns and M-60's in PD-680 to boot! What long, long days... If memory serves, we had one hot meal (breakfast) most days and "C" rations the rest of the time.
I am a veteran of both Gulf war 1 and Somalia . My cousin however was in the 117th in 'NAM I believe he was there from '69-71 Donald R. Grider. I think he was a Warlord then Beachbum and maybe ANNIE FANNIE I feel pretty certain that he was two of the three listed. From what I understand the call sign changed when they moved in-country. All of the vet's that where there and served either in-country or not have my utmost respect the ones that did not go because their assignments in the service did not send them (they did not dodge) and those that did go have never received their proper thanks. Like I tell Don all the time I love him and Respect him and thank him for having to do what he had to do. And to all of the 'Nam vets I always say to them Thank-you for your service. I was to young and little to go when it ended in 1975 (I was 4) Thank you all Chuck Cravens
I CAME IN-COUNTRY 5/1/68 TO THE 117TH AS A SP-4 MECHANIC. IN JUNE I WAS SENT NEXT DOOR TO THE 195TH BECAUSE THEY WERE LOSING THEIR PROP AND ROTOR PERSON. I HAD MADE FRIENDS WITH SOME OT THE CREW MEMBERS AND STAYED IN TOUCH WHILE I WAS IN THE 195TH. TED WALLACE AND WARFIELD DOORGUNNERS, MOUNTED 50 CAL'S ON THEIR GUN SHIPS. JOHN SMITH GOT HIT IN THE HEAD WITH A TAIL ROTOR THE FIRST WEEK I WAS IN THE COMPANY. WHO WAS THE GUY THAT KEPT THE GENERATOR RUNNING DOWN BY THE SHIT CAN? 941 PRAIRIE CREEK DRIVE, DE SOTO, TEXAS 75115 I RIDE BIKE, WOULD LIKE TO HOOK UP WITH OTHERS WHO RIDE.
NOTE FROM WEBMASTER: John, I apologize to you. I accidentally deleted some info you sent, please accept my apology AND RESEND - THANKS.
Not that it makes a lot of difference at this date and time, but I notice that in all the writings of the 117th there is no mention of the medical detachment that served this company. The medical detachment was the 130th Medical Detachment and this was attached to the 117th. I was the flight surgeon and CO of the 130th, serving under Major Aiton when I first got there in October 1963 and later under Major McGuire. And the pilot of our Dustoff Helicopter was Capt. Scanlan. I believe I replaced a Captain by the name of McDonald or something like that but I do not know who came after me as the way the flight surgeons were rotated did not leave much time for real formal introduction or quality time together before the replacement took off.

Comments: This is a great website... Just a flood of memories, with many incomplete... I served at Plantation, under Maj. Hernandez, with Bommelyn, Boderford, Mimms, Peoples, a guy named Bob (Robert) Quigley from Montana and lots of others whose names and faces just don't quite seem to match up. A favorite pilot was Warlord 22 (double-Deuce). The ship I had, had no external markings, all green, not even the X on tail boom. Lots of ferrying into Cambodia and along the border by Tay Ninh. What a nice job done on this website.
