Need some help on one of your fallen pilots. Am doing some research on ground troops on 18 Aug 68. WO Michael Harlament died of wounds on 20 Aug, and may have been involved on the 18th. He had only been in-country for a month, but wondering if anyone remembers him and/or what had happened to him? VHPA doesn't show a tail number, and I can't find any 1D's that crashed. We (think) that he may have been in an unauthorized Raven that day that had been attached to 222nd. Pls email me.

Personal contact. I host the 145th CABA website from my personal website. Please visit the 145th CABA website when you can. It too has history and more.
Welcome Home to all that returned alive, and to all in spirit that did not.
If you flew with the 145th Combat Aviation Battalion, please join the association if you haven't already, and come to our 2003 reunion to be held at Ft. Rucker in June.
Cheers, Brian Wizard, gunner on the 118th smokeship Pollution IV.
PS: I have stories and video, music and more regarding my combat experience, plus a report on my return to Viet Nam in 1999. Some items are for free and others for sale on my site. Sales help maintain the 145th CABA website.

Looking for anyone who flew for my unit in Vietnam. Have an award winning film documentary "SILENT VICTORY" in which (retired) General Norman Schwarzkopf helped us out because he knew what F/51 LRP and it's pilots did in RVN before, during and after Tet 1968. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Trying to locate TOM HALLIWELL about his Recondo books for added information.

Howdy, everyone. I just wanted to point out that from my website you can download a short report about my return to Viet Nam in 1999, For Free under short stories, and you can download my music video (I don't want) Permission to Kill, For Free, and you can download the condensed version of my novel Permission to Kill, which is titled Pollution IV as an e-book.
Also, I used to host the 145th CABA website, but that duty has been transferred to the association itself. You can still link to the site from my site or type in www.oldwarriors.com

I would also remind those looking up this web site, to click onto the link called; Americas' 1st Military Helicopter Use. There they will find a story about one of the LAST living Air Forces 1st Helicopter pilots of World War II who only now after 58 years has finally recieved his medals that he earned for the some 17 rescues to did back then.
I personnely met Bob Cowgill several times recently at his home and also help Fred Duncan of Huber Heights, OH. in geeting his story out into the open and push for his medals. PLEASE read the story that the newspaper in his area, The Leader of Port Townsand, Wash. did about him as well when looking over this web site; http://my.tenforward.com/bud/

Suxch a rich heritage you gave us who followed you! Support at Dak To, etc.
I was in the unit as it stood down.-m 2nd Flt Platoon Leader & Motor Officer... 523 was my aircraft. I'd look at the log book & see all those VietNam hours, and just wonder... This web site has helped fill in the blanks!
I discovered an irony today... and I thought that you'd be the folks to tell...
My cousin - JE Shuyler - was Capt Carpenters medic at Toumorong (Dak To) in Operation Hawthorne. It may have been one of you who brought him back to us after he died on 9 June 1966.
The irony? I was the third from the last officer to leave(Nov 1980) the 117th at ChunChon as we turned the unit over to South Korea. I did not know, until today, that my first aviation unit shared the same PUC as did my cousins unit. It is quite possible that I flew (in 79 - 80) the very Huey that brought him off the battlefield in 1966...
Thanks for all your heritage and bravery. I appreciate it more now that ever.
Thanks!
Marsha S Finley

After feb 71 I lost all memories of viet nam execpt for fun times with cw kendall my co pilot and best friend. On aug. 1, 2003 a small part of my memories came back and another vet saw that I was suffering from PTSD and drove me to the VA hospital and was put into a lock down addiction and mental ward for 17 days I was then transfered to the National Center for PTSD which I graduated from 10-28-03. Durring my stay there I rembered that my friends first name was Jerry and that he and my crew were KIA shortly after I left Viet Nam. Thanks to your web site I located Jerry's name and the names of my crew KIA 3-15-71. Unfortunely None of the names execpt Jerry's do I remember. Also other names of guys on the roster don't ring any bells even other KIA's. I am not currently looking for any details that I dont rember at this time the PTSD Center did not want to unlock any more than I rember at this time. I only remger pieces of 4 events at this time. thanks to the Center for PTSD I am starting a new life with new friends and goals and I am starting to finnaly have a meaningful life. If anyone knowes of a vet with PTSD try your best to get them to a vet center for help I can't tell you how happy a fellow vet took me to get help. If any one wants to contact me I would like that. This site brings back lots of memories, mostly good memories but some sad ones also. I flew with the 1st Plt when it was led by Cpt Mike (Iron Mike)Reitz who was killed along with all of his crew plus our Artillery FO (Shocker)and two LRRPs on 3 September 1969. Cpt Smith then became our Plt Leader. When Cpt Smith returned to the States, I was given command of the Plt. Upon my departure to the States in July 1970, Cpt James Dawson, from Charleston,SC assumed command of the Plt. After 22 years military service and another 20 years Civil Service, working for the Army, I felt I had had enough. I am completely retired now living in Arizona and trying to age gracefully.
I would like to thank Allen Bennett for putting this web site together.

Like Leon Mruczkowski stated hard to get info on the 8th Trans and 140th CHFM. Would like to hear from any 140th CHFM vets. Especially 1961-62 who were at Ft. Bragg and then on to Qui Nhon, VN. Attended 145th CAB reunion last year and met two pilots from the 8th during that period. Hope to be at 04 reunion of 117th in June.

Served in the 117th, which after Vietnam was sent directly to Korea, and stationed at A-306, Camp Paige, Chunchon. During my tour, I crewed 66-16262, which had seen previous action as part of the unit in the RVN. That was a strong aircraft with a leaky blade grip, and I wouldn't be surprised if she were still flying today. Photos of that bird are on this website. God Bless all of you vets of the RVN

Found this web address on the Indiana Rangers web page report by Zita Moore. I was with Co. D 151st Rangers from late August of '69 until Uncle broke up the unit. I was RTO For Team 17. Some of you guys hauled my ass out of more than one tight situation. I also remember some damned hairy night insertions going in to reinforce other teams.
I always knew the Annie Fannies and the Playboys were the best chopper units anywhere - from pilots to gunners to crew chiefs Never had to tell/ask you folks anything more than once and it was done. When one of you said you were coming in to get us, you came and got us, no hesitation.
Man, did things change after you folks left before D Company was put on stand down. Your subs just couldn't fill your shoes. And it was worse when I got to F. Company with the 25th division.
Everyone of you has my eternal gratitude and respect. Thanks for helping keep my butt alive.

So totally enjoyed meeting Al Bennett, as well as Annie Fannie crewmembers Tom Joyner and Ken Haywood in Indianapolis. Thanks to first platoon, 117th AHC, I have a lot of very special friends in the Indiana Rangers. The Annie Fannie crews made sure they could get everyone out alive. For that I am forever grateful to the 117th - you guys rock! One crew perished during their tour, though. There will be a memorial service at Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, IN for Iron Mike Reitz and his crew, John Klingen, Reginald Begnoche, and Richard Stanley on September 12, 2004. Their helicopter crashed 4 September 1969. Also on board were Larry Kleiber and Kenneth Cummings of Company D (Ranger) 151st Infantry, and the forward observer attached to D/151. You Annie Fannie pilots are invited to the Company D (Ranger) 151st Infantry Reunion 12-14 August 2004. Hope to see lots of
you there! Z

Hello,
I'm Kelly Mayhew daughter of Col. John Mayhew 281st.
My boyfriends father died last year and I'm trying to find any information about him.
I would like to know if you know anything about his father. This is going to be a surprise
for him so I don't have much info to go on.
Information I have:
Name John l Hawley
He was a pilot or I think he was a gunner.
He was in the 117 Air Brigade or Cave? I know the 117 is right.
Pleiku -- I know he was in this area.
Here is a copy of his obituary:
John L. Hawley, 79, a career noncommissioned officer in the Army, died of respiratory failure July 28 at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital in Fairfax.
Mr. Hawley, a native of Pomeroy, Ohio, enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and flew B-17, B-24 and B-29 aircraft in the Pacific theater. His aerial reconnaissance photography over heavily defended enemy territory prepared troops for the invasion of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The work earned him a Distinguished Flying Cross.
After World War II, he worked as a plant supervisor in a Chrysler Airtemp plant in Dayton, Ohio, for several years and then reenlisted in the military. He joined the Army and saw tours of duty in Japan, France, Belgium, Korea and Vietnam. He was awarded numerous Air Medals and Army Commendation Medals and retired in 1974 as a sergeant first class.
If you have any information please let me know. I know I don't have much to go on. But it's worth a try. I hope you can help me!
Thank you!!!

Finally gettin' around to getting hearing aids. Damn H-21 midcase transmission is about the loudest noise you could possibly imagine.
I wonder what ever happened to the bicycle with the steering wheel that I left behind.
I'd appreciate any information on any airworthy H-21's that anyone knows about.

I was there before they started shooting at us. The bastards. We had a blast, before then, losing the war, coming back to the Hooch, shower, go into downtown Qui Nhon to Madaam Kontum's or the Green Beret Bar or, truth be told, the Turkey Farm.Until 18 Dec 64 when my pilot extroindinare, Robert Thruston got himself killed with me in the left seat. Other than that episode, my year in Viet-Nam was uneventful.
Here is a quiz for everyone: What was your cadance call in flight school? My class, 64-4W it was" pull pitch and go," We tried Spin, Crash &Burn but BOUF and others of his ilk vetoed it. For those still awake: after VN I spent my last year 66/67 as an IP at Dept RW Tactics, Tac-X, Mother Rucker.

Gentlemen,
I served in Viet-Nam 1970-71. I was stationed at Plantation Army Air field. I was one of the air traffic controllers at the field assigned to the 316th ASD.
Our headquarters and barracks was accross the airfield from ya'll and close to the fire hall manned by the 25th. I worked the Sidewinders & Warlords in and out all the time. I especially remember "the lone frog", but not spelled that way.
I might have a few pictures (jpegs) I could e-mail if you give me an address to send them to.
Thanks for your time and the memories.

Mr. Bennett was kind enough to return an email that I sent out regarding a special friend I had named Virgil Whitaker PFC, 117th Assault Helicopter Company. Virgil was a gunner. I met him over 20 years ago. He was much older than me but that did not matter. He died in March of `92 as you can see from the "Died After Vietnam" section in this site.
I have been trying to locate anyone who knew him. Besides the horror stories he told me, all I know about his position is that he was with the 117th AHC as a gunner. He served his time in Vietnam during the years of 1968 and his second tour was in 1969. There is also the possibility that he was transferred to assist the 222nd Combat team. I'm not sure on that though.
Mr. Bennett may post on this site the email I sent that he kindly responded to. I'm not trying to ask for too much. I just want some contact with someone who knew him then. I lost him and I didn't get to say goodbye. I think of him almost daily.
Can anyone please help me?
Mr. Bennett, your kind words have made me feel a bit better today. Guilt is horrible. I can't help what happened and I'm going to work on that. But I still have a strong desire/need to be in contact with someone, anyone, who knew Virgil.
Thank you Mr. Bennett so much for your time. You must be an incredible person with much heart.
Christy

I was in the Sidewinders in 1969 I had air craft # 65-9488 I got it from crewchief James Mayton. He use to call me HUCK, and I had that written on the sound proofing above my head, left side. I have some pictures, but I took a lot of slides. We worked two different day time missions one for the Third Mobile Strike Force, and one for the Sea Wolves at Nha Be. After that we flew Fire Fly missions at night. There was A-Tac which was local, and on call, and B-Tac which was planned missions with a observer in a slick telling us what to do. Usually three of those missions per night.
I was sorry to read that Mr. John deWitt has passed. He was my Favorite pilot, and we flew together the most. When I left the 117th to come home he flew over the 90th replacement center with the firefly light on looking for me, and saying good bye.
Also Mr. Jimmy McLean (little dinger) I also flew with him a lot, they will both be missed.

FIRST I WANT TO SAY HI TO ALL MY BROTHER VETERANS AND WELCOME HOME. A LOT OF YOU MAY REMEMBER SEEING ME BUT I PRETTY MUCH STAYED ALONE IN NAM. WHEN I FIRST ARRIVED IN NAM I WAS WITH THE 140TH MOTOR POOL, DIDN'T CARE TOO MUCH FOR IT, SO I STARTED WITH 117TH HAULING JET FUEL FROM BEIN HOA TO THE PLANTATION AND FUELING THE CHOPPERS. ALL THIS WAS DONE AT NIGHT BY MYSELF.
I ALSO HAULED AMMUNITION IN ON A FLAT BED TRUCK. I WAS ALSO DRIVING THE TANKER TRL
FILLED WITH WATER FOR YOUR SHOWERS, WHICH KEPT ME PRETTY BUSY, SO I NEVER REALLY GOT TO KNOW ANYONE. I RECOGNIZE SOME OF THEM IN THE PICTURES YOU HAVE ON YOUR WEB SITE AND I DID FILL IN ONCE IN AWHILE FOR A GUY WHO WAS IN THE SIDEWIDERS. CAN'T RECALL HIS NAME. FOR A MATTER A FACT I CAN'T RECALL ANYBODY'S NAME THAT WAS THERE FROM APRIL-3-68 THUR APRIL-3-69. I DON'T KNOW WHY I DIDN'T MAKE ANY FRIENDS WHILE I WAS THERE. I'M 57 NOW AND I STILL DON'T HAVE ANY FRIENDS, I THINK I HAD A BAD OUTLOOK ON LIFE FOR ALL THESE YEARS, ANYHOW I WAS PROUD TO BE WITH THE 117TH AHC THE BEST COMPANY IN NAM, MY TENT WAS RIGHT ACROSS FROM THE SIDEWIDERS. CLEAR LEFT, NORMAN COUCH.

I am doing research on the area of Vietnam where I served most of my three tours. It was in western III Corps in the Pineapple region. I am looking for anyone who can provide me with information on "OPERATION CHOPPER" with the 8th and the 57th Transportation Companies (Light Helicopter) which took place either on 23 DEC 61 OR 12 JAN 62 in the Pineapple region about 10 miles due west of Saigon.
I am looking for location of Operation Chopper. The more specific the better. Map coordinates would be best. This is a critical piece of information for my research. ANY assistance or leads will be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.

Hello, I'm writing to you from Sweden. The helicopter company I work for has recently purchased a Bell 205 (UH-1D, later turned into UH-1H). After some research on the internet I found out that it had once been named 66-01156 (cn 5639) and belonged to the US Army 117th Assault Helicopter Company between
November 1966 and February 1969. It was probably known as just 1156.
Just a long shot, if anyone happens to remember this particular aircraft. It was sold to Spain in 1995 where it did firefighting and the ship is now in Sweden as a heavy lifter. Please contact me if anyone has any info on this ship.
Best regards
Fredrik Regn?

I collect pocket patches from VN US Army Helicopter Units. I am trying to research a couple patches in my collection concerning the 117th and trying to locate a couple of original pocket patches for my collection. I have a small round Sidewinders patch that refers to the sidewinders as the 1st platoon with a snake wrapped around a "1" and the motto "non et perspiro wetsu" can anyone provide me with a timeframe or story on this patch.I am also looking for information when the first Annie Fannie patches came about, the design which had the Annie Fannie image stinciled in black on a pink shield and when this transitioned to the full color version embroidered pocket patch.
I am trying to locate an original 2nd platoon Pink Panther Pocket patch in which the pink panther is sitting and smoking a pipe on a shield, I do not know if it came before or after the standing panther with the cane and cigar.I am also looking for 2 diffrent patches used by the lightship crews which featured a cartoon helicopter on one design and a Tiger on a second design.
I am also looking for information when the Sidewinder design patch for the gun platoon changed from a snake with a rocket pod on a blue shield to a "Cobra" hooded snake without the pods on a blue shield.
If anyone has any infomation they would share anything would be appriciated. And if anyone has examples of the sitting panther patches or lightships patches I would love to see color photos of them. I would also make generous offers to anyone who had an extra or one they would consider parting with. Please feel free to cotact me.
Thank You, Jeff Williams

Now i'm told it could have been agent orange? Maybe something from the wild boar we ate at the lrrps?
Anyway i made it back in may of 70 and they told me i shouldn't have come back! They thought i was dead! Dam if only i'd known.
only flew a couple of missions before i was grounded for medical reasons. does anyone remember me??

My name is William hill Though I am also spent two tour 100% disabled from wounds incurred in the RVN. I am sending this too ask about my hero one James h Hill served years in your unit. My father whom I found served in and loved this unit and although his memory of names is like us all needed jumpstarted I found many old photos of you all your ships the h -21's mostly I assume was him on your rooster , I do know he was with your unit did ship out arriving in RVN in the Port of Saigon in Dec of 1961 He as a chew chief Now lives in South Carolina and both because and although he is quite Ill I decided I need too try. For me any man who served in World War Two, in Korea and Vietnam , Let alone being my father who also lives and breaths stories of his helicopters since the 1950's The stories he has or as yours I am sure, I recently on a visit found he has many photos of you unit as it was in 1961 and 1962 as well of before your deployment I would like too at some point scan those photo and forward them too the proper person so they may be shared by all those who these photos may help enjoy memories. I as a combat veteran understand the value of the history of a unit. As well as the deep pride I hold for my father, the apperception my two tours as an infantry man has for the men who flew into so many places too assist us. God Bless merry Christmas
My E-mail address is bravo412@mchsi.com. If I send this to one in either an improper manner or the proper person please forgive me.
