Just wondering if anyone besides myself served in this outfit while it was still the 117th TC Airmobile. Maybe I should look into the rest of the Website.

Need some help on one of your fallen pilots. Am doing some research on ground troops on 18 Aug 68. WO Michael Harlament died of wounds on 20 Aug, and may have been involved on the 18th. He had only been in-country for a month, but wondering if anyone remembers him and/or what had happened to him? VHPA doesn't show a tail number, and I can't find any 1D's that crashed. We (think) that he may have been in an unauthorized Raven that day that had been attached to 222nd. Pls email me.

Personal contact. I host the 145th CABA website from my personal website. Please visit the 145th CABA website when you can. It too has history and more.

Welcome Home to all that returned alive, and to all in spirit that did not.

If you flew with the 145th Combat Aviation Battalion, please join the association if you haven't already, and come to our 2003 reunion to be held at Ft. Rucker in June.

Cheers, Brian Wizard, gunner on the 118th smokeship Pollution IV.

PS: I have stories and video, music and more regarding my combat experience, plus a report on my return to Viet Nam in 1999. Some items are for free and others for sale on my site. Sales help maintain the 145th CABA website.

Looking for anyone who flew for my unit in Vietnam. Have an award winning film documentary "SILENT VICTORY" in which (retired) General Norman Schwarzkopf helped us out because he knew what F/51 LRP and it's pilots did in RVN before, during and after Tet 1968. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Trying to locate TOM HALLIWELL about his Recondo books for added information. God bless.

Howdy, everyone. I just wanted to point out that from my website you can download a short report about my return to Viet Nam in 1999, For Free under short stories, and you can download my music video (I don't want) Permission to Kill, For Free, and you can download the condensed version of my novel Permission to Kill, which is titled Pollution IV as an e-book. Also, I used to host the 145th CABA website, but that duty has been transferred to the association itself. You can still link to the site from my site or type in www.oldwarriors.com

Cheers, Brian Wizard

I would also remind those looking up this web site, to click onto the link called; Americas' 1st Military Helicopter Use. There they will find a story about one of the LAST living Air Forces 1st Helicopter pilots of World War II who only now after 58 years has finally recieved his medals that he earned for the some 17 rescues to did back then. I personnely met Bob Cowgill several times recently at his home and also help Fred Duncan of Huber Heights, OH. in geeting his story out into the open and push for his medals. PLEASE read the story that the newspaper in his area, The Leader of Port Townsand, Wash. did about him as well when looking over this web site; http://my.tenforward.com/bud/ A proud American Merchant Marine veteran of WW II. Suxch a rich heritage you gave us who followed you! Support at Dak To, etc.

I was in the unit as it stood down.-m 2nd Flt Platoon Leader & Motor Officer... 523 was my aircraft. I'd look at the log book & see all those VietNam hours, and just wonder... This web site has helped fill in the blanks!

I discovered an irony today... and I thought that you'd be the folks to tell...

My cousin - JE Shuyler - was Capt Carpenters medic at Toumorong (Dak To) in Operation Hawthorne. It may have been one of you who brought him back to us after he died on 9 June 1966.

The irony? I was the third from the last officer to leave(Nov 1980) the 117th at ChunChon as we turned the unit over to South Korea. I did not know, until today, that my first aviation unit shared the same PUC as did my cousins unit. It is quite possible that I flew (in 79 - 80) the very Huey that brought him off the battlefield in 1966...

Thanks for all your heritage and bravery. I appreciate it more now that ever.

    Thanks!

Marsha S Finley MAJ, USA, AVN (Ret)

After feb 71 I lost all memories of viet nam execpt for fun times with cw kendall my co pilot and best friend. On aug. 1, 2003 a small part of my memories came back and another vet saw that I was suffering from PTSD and drove me to the VA hospital and was put into a lock down addiction and mental ward for 17 days I was then transfered to the National Center for PTSD which I graduated from 10-28-03. Durring my stay there I rembered that my friends first name was Jerry and that he and my crew were KIA shortly after I left Viet Nam. Thanks to your web site I located Jerry's name and the names of my crew KIA 3-15-71. Unfortunely None of the names execpt Jerry's do I remember. Also other names of guys on the roster don't ring any bells even other KIA's. I am not currently looking for any details that I dont rember at this time the PTSD Center did not want to unlock any more than I rember at this time. I only remger pieces of 4 events at this time. thanks to the Center for PTSD I am starting a new life with new friends and goals and I am starting to finnaly have a meaningful life. If anyone knowes of a vet with PTSD try your best to get them to a vet center for help I can't tell you how happy a fellow vet took me to get help. If any one wants to contact me I would like that. This site brings back lots of memories, mostly good memories but some sad ones also. I flew with the 1st Plt when it was led by Cpt Mike (Iron Mike)Reitz who was killed along with all of his crew plus our Artillery FO (Shocker)and two LRRPs on 3 September 1969. Cpt Smith then became our Plt Leader. When Cpt Smith returned to the States, I was given command of the Plt. Upon my departure to the States in July 1970, Cpt James Dawson, from Charleston,SC assumed command of the Plt. After 22 years military service and another 20 years Civil Service, working for the Army, I felt I had had enough. I am completely retired now living in Arizona and trying to age gracefully.

I would like to thank Allen Bennett for putting this web site together.

looking forward to reuniting with some old friends, the best people that I have ever known, I have already emailed Britt Knox and received a reply. When I first saw the 117th web page it made me proud and I would like to say thanks for the obvious hard work and dedication that all have put into it, I am sorry that I have been lax in looking up my old friends...life and time has traveled at warp speed these past 30 plus years. thanks, Bill.....

Attended 145th CAB reunion last year and met two pilots from the 8th during that period. Hope to be at 04 reunion of 117th in June.

Served in the 117th, which after Vietnam was sent directly to Korea, and stationed at A-306, Camp Paige, Chunchon. During my tour, I crewed 66-16262, which had seen previous action as part of the unit in the RVN. That was a strong aircraft with a leaky blade grip, and I wouldn't be surprised if she were still flying today. Photos of that bird are on this website. God Bless all of you vets of the RVN

Found this web address on the Indiana Rangers web page report by Zita Moore. I was with Co. D 151st Rangers from late August of '69 until Uncle broke up the unit. I was RTO For Team 17. Some of you guys hauled my ass out of more than one tight situation. I also remember some damned hairy night insertions going in to reinforce other teams. I always knew the Annie Fannies and the Playboys were the best chopper units anywhere - from pilots to gunners to crew chiefs Never had to tell/ask you folks anything more than once and it was done. When one of you said you were coming in to get us, you came and got us, no hesitation. Man, did things change after you folks left before D Company was put on stand down. Your subs just couldn't fill your shoes. And it was worse when I got to F. Company with the 25th division. Everyone of you has my eternal gratitude and respect. Thanks for helping keep my butt alive.

So totally enjoyed meeting Al Bennett, as well as Annie Fannie crewmembers Tom Joyner and Ken Haywood in Indianapolis. Thanks to first platoon, 117th AHC, I have a lot of very special friends in the Indiana Rangers. The Annie Fannie crews made sure they could get everyone out alive. For that I am forever grateful to the 117th - you guys rock! One crew perished during their tour, though. There will be a memorial service at Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, IN for Iron Mike Reitz and his crew, John Klingen, Reginald Begnoche, and Richard Stanley on September 12, 2004. Their helicopter crashed 4 September 1969. Also on board were Larry Kleiber and Kenneth Cummings of Company D (Ranger) 151st Infantry, and the forward observer attached to D/151. You Annie Fannie pilots are invited to the Company D (Ranger) 151st Infantry Reunion 12-14 August 2004. Hope to see lots of you there! Z

If anybody new my father, James L. Clifton..he was a WO then received a direct commission, I sure would like to hear back from you...he was there 68-69 I think. He's still around and doing well, but occasionally still has flash backs one of which I witnessed during emergence from anesthesia 2 yrs ago...I think it would help if I could put him in touch with someone he knew.. thanks in advance Bryan Clifton, M.D.

Hello, I'm Kelly Mayhew daughter of Col. John Mayhew 281st. My boyfriends father died last year and I'm trying to find any information about him. I would like to know if you know anything about his father. This is going to be a surprise for him so I don't have much info to go on. Information I have: Name John l Hawley He was a pilot or I think he was a gunner. He was in the 117 Air Brigade or Cave? I know the 117 is right. Pleiku -- I know he was in this area. Here is a copy of his obituary: John L. Hawley, 79, a career noncommissioned officer in the Army, died of respiratory failure July 28 at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital in Fairfax. Mr. Hawley, a native of Pomeroy, Ohio, enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and flew B-17, B-24 and B-29 aircraft in the Pacific theater. His aerial reconnaissance photography over heavily defended enemy territory prepared troops for the invasion of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The work earned him a Distinguished Flying Cross. After World War II, he worked as a plant supervisor in a Chrysler Airtemp plant in Dayton, Ohio, for several years and then reenlisted in the military. He joined the Army and saw tours of duty in Japan, France, Belgium, Korea and Vietnam. He was awarded numerous Air Medals and Army Commendation Medals and retired in 1974 as a sergeant first class. If you have any information please let me know. I know I don't have much to go on. But it's worth a try. I hope you can help me! Thank you!!! Kelly Mayhew

I was there before they started shooting at us. The bastards. We had a blast, before then, losing the war, coming back to the Hooch, shower, go into downtown Qui Nhon to Madaam Kontum's or the Green Beret Bar or, truth be told, the Turkey Farm.Until 18 Dec 64 when my pilot extroindinare, Robert Thruston got himself killed with me in the left seat. Other than that episode, my year in Viet-Nam was uneventful. Here is a quiz for everyone: What was your cadance call in flight school? My class, 64-4W it was" pull pitch and go," We tried Spin, Crash &Burn but BOUF and others of his ilk vetoed it. For those still awake: after VN I spent my last year 66/67 as an IP at Dept RW Tactics, Tac-X, Mother Rucker.
